oh, my... the titles in english say nothing to me except Forest Gump. maybe because i am the same old?
well, if to mention how many times i have seen this or that movie then "Notting Hill" is my favorite. i've seen it about 10 times. the sound was bad and no captions. then i got russian version of the movie and... i'll tell you, none of the movies was so interesting for me. finally i got everything they were talking about!but it was a great disappointment as well. i've heard Hugh Grant calls Julia Roberts "bitch"
and after russian version i was eager to see the movie in english again. oh, it was sooo absorbingbut it's all is not serious...
2) i've seen "Ocean's eleven" many times also because i liked the intrigue, the tricks of the cheaters and i enjoyed the acting.

I got my first tutor when I was, like, 5 - what other options did I (or rather my parents) have? Not the method that I've recommended in my first answer, for sureBesides, not a whole lot of native speakers were hanging around at the time (1978, if you know what I mean).
Lots of British ones - can't help it, adore the accent and vocabulary (Lock, Stock; Snatch; Sliding Doors; Bridget Jones; Saving Grace; Waking Ned Devine - these are right in front of me on my shelf). Aside from that, my tastes are rather plebeian - action flicks and comedies are the genres of choice. Alas, I did not like every single one of your Top 5

These days, you might get a better job because of that, for starters...how about extra $300 in your wallet every month? Is this motivation enough? Also, as they say, you got all the world at your fingertips - with the Internet, you may obtain whatever information you need for your professional growth, which also increases your market value. One would be able to watch movies and read books untranslated - you'd be surprised how many nuances have been lost in translation. And so forth...

Lets be a bit closer to the topic. Well, I'm not in USA, I'm in Japan.
The most efficient way for me was a self-studying english just while working on the comp (i.e. programming), playing computer games, talking over the Internet (recent 5 years), etc.
Well, maybe it's not a good way to practice in conversations, but of course it's very useful to extend a vocabulary. Reading books (or manuals and tutorials, huh
) and watching movies is also a good way recognize and remember some language structures (I mean grammar) inside a natural context, rather than using synthetic samples from the teaching book.
Sometimes I don't know the rule but I know exactly that I have read it somwhere and it is probably correct
PS All the time dealing with computer I use ONLY english software (if possible). It's a rule

First, one needs to have some basic understanding of English grammar. So, it won't work without books or tutors.
Then, you need to constantly work on your vocabulary. I'm afraid, it's again books - only reading something with a lot of every-day speech you'll fill yourself up with all the words you need.
Anything else (movies, games, etc.) goes side by side with what I mentioned above and further enriches your vocabulary and promotes "English thinking".
(and of course everything depends on the capabilities of the student!).

frankly saying, i am stuck with my level of English also -- there is no any progress. i can see the movie in english, i can read the letters of my foreign friends, i can even chat with them but i use all the same models of the expressions... and seems i do all the same mistakes using the wrong tensesseems it's just enough for me and nobody complains.
(that is why i have started learning French )

You know , I had the same problem. but now it looks like like I've managed to solve it. I'd been working with an american guy as an interpreter and that was of great use for me. Actually he was always using his certain models too. So I tried to mix his and mine. And it was pretty successful - I got some new set phrases and models.
