The tern Runglish stands for Russian English, that is the variety of English spoken by Russian native speakers, of whom there are about 130 million living in over 15 countries. Russian has an official status in Russia (the Russian Federation), Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kirghizia, does not have an official status but is spoken by a large number of people in Ukraine, Moldova (former Moldavia), Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. It is also spoken in Transnistria (Moldova), Abkhazia (Georgia), South Ossetia (Georgia), and Alaska (USA).

Runglish has its own distinctive pronunciation, lexis, and grammar. Traditionally it is closer to British than American English (as the majority of Russian mother-tongue speakers live in Europe, and Europe is well-known for being British-orientated). British pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and punctuation are educational standards in Russian schools and universities, however business and computing spheres little by little prefer the American norm. Some Russian textbooks also touch on Australian English, but the main aspect considered there is the preference of either British or American spelling and vocabulary. Other varieties, such as Canadian, New Zealand, South African, Indian, Singapore, Malaysian, popular nowadays African-American Vernacular, etc. are not even mentioned.
