I think that American English has a number of differences in vocabulary and grammar. It's just a "variant" of British English.American English spelling also differs from British English spelling and of course there is a great difference in pronunciation. But as for me I didn't have any problems in conversations with Americans. I could understand them even better than the Englishmen

I completely agree. But I like Englishmen's pronunciation far more, it's more gentle and easier for understanding.
